Peugeot 1969 : 304
Taken from the 204, the 304 aimed to fill the niche for medium-size engined models. It kept the same wheelbase and central body section as its predecessor. However, the rear was extended (15 cm), while the modernised front, with its quad headlights, evoked that of the 504. Under the bonnet, a 1.3 litre 70 hp engine was fitted. In 1970, the 304 cabriolets and coupés replaced their 204 counterparts. These were sold as the 304 S in 1972 with their engine power having increased to 80 hp. The 304 S saloon would arrive six months later. A new similar-sized engine would appear in 1976, but with an identical bore to the diesel XL 4D with a view to rationalisation. The 304 model became a market leader for Peugeot and its success had no adverse impact on the 204.
